Our InterBridge project caught the attention of Czech Radio Liberec in connection with the exhibition "Optics: Science and Creativity". On Monday, October 14th, 2024, I received a call from the editor of the show A pleasant afternoon from Liberec – a news service full of information from the Liberec region, reports from the scene, cultural invitations, and public affairs. The interview focused on introducing our project, inviting people to the exhibition, and discussing the plans for the next stage of the project.
The phone connection wasn’t ideal—CXI only boosts the signal locally for T-Mobile, and I have O2, which led to some technical difficulties. Still, I managed to mention Interreg Czechia-Saxony, InterBridge, the Faculty of Textile Engineering, the Faculty of Architecture,
the Technical University of Liberec twice, the Technical University Chemnitz twice, Czech-German cooperation, and our project website. I couldn’t have squeezed in any more ... :-)
Personally, I enjoyed my "5 minutes of fame"; during the interview, and at the same time, we’re fulfilling one of our project commitments—promotion and publicity. So, I consider it a success on all fronts!
Even though this show is not archived, I don’t want to deprive you of this amazing experience. Below, you can listen to the audio recording of the interview (a bit scratchy at
first, but then it’s fine), or you can read the transcript.
Hana Křížová
Interviewer: Tomorrow morning – you’ve just been nicely prepared for it by Lucie Bílá and Josef Vojtek on Czech Radio Liberec (note: the song that just finished playing before the interview). By the way, that was quite an unusual, yet well-functioning combination. But how can such a combination of science and art work? It may sound incompatible at first, but we’re about to convince you otherwise. You can see how scientific work influences the art of school children at a new exhibition that opens today at the Technical University of Liberec. Hana Křížová from the university’s Institute for Nanomaterials, advanced Technologies and Innovation will tell us more. Good afternoon!
HK: Good afternoon!
Interviewer: To start, can you tell us what kind of works we’ll see at the exhibition, and who created them?
HK: Since the InterBridge project is part of the European Interreg Czech Republic-Saxony project, the creators of the exhibited works are people from both sides of the Czech-German border, and they come from all age groups – children, high school students, and adults from the public. The exhibition is divided into two parts. One part consists of artworks created during our workshops, which focus on electron and optical microscopy. For example, we’re exhibiting pictures from children at Sokolovská Elementary School in Liberec, which were made during a bionics workshop. Then there are works from two Bubble Painting workshops – these were held in Germany at the Lessing Elementary School in Zittau. And there are also T-shirts with pictures created during a workshop with an electron microscope, prepared for us by students from the Art School in Liberec. The second part consists of light exhibits and installations. These were made in collaboration between my colleagues from the project – technicians – with performers, artists, and students – for example, from the Faculty of Architecture or students from the Technical University in Chemnitz, as our partners in the project include colleagues from Chemnitz University of Technology. So, all the works somehow connect science and art.
Interviewer: In the first phase of your European project InterBridge, you focused on optics. What comes next?
HK: The next phase will focus mainly on 3D printing. Since we want to connect technology and creativity again, we’ll show how 3D printing can be used in fashion. We’re preparing a clothing collection in collaboration with the Faculty of Textile, and both Czech and German designers – fashion, textile, and jewelry designers – will participate. They will create clothes, fashion accessories, and jewelry using not only 3D printing of plastics, but also 3D printing of ceramics, metals, and glass. These are all techniques we’re researching at the Institute for Nanomaterials, and our partners from the Chemnitz University of Technology are also working on them. And then we’ll present this here (note: OMG... 🤦♀️) clothing collection at an international fashion show. I also hope that through our workshops, we’ll get some creative enthusiasts from the public involved, as we’ll be hosting workshops on making jewelry with handheld 3D printing pens. So, anyone from the public can participate. And if I can just point out, all the events will be available on the website of the Technical University of Liberec, as well as on our project website, www.interbridgeproject.com.
Interviewer: And one last important question: Where can our listeners see the exhibition, and how long will it be open?
HK: The exhibition is at the Technical University of Liberec, specifically in building G, on University Square, on the 3rd floor in the foyer of the auditorium. This Thursday, October 17th, at 3 PM, we’re holding the grand opening, so I’d like to warmly invite all listeners to the vernissage. The exhibition will be open until November 11th, every weekday from morning to evening and on Saturday mornings.
Interviewer: … says Hana Křížová from the Institute for Nanomaterials, advanced Technologies, and Innovation at the Technical University of Liberec. Thank you very much, and goodbye!
HK: Thank you, goodbye!
